Product Development Project Manager

ABOUT THE POSITION

Aqua-Leisure is searching for a rockstar Project Manager, Product Development with proven success in bringing profitable products to market. The Project Manager is responsible for driving the on-time delivery of products across all categories. This role will facilitate continual communication and collaboration within the company's U.S. and overseas product/ marketing teams to ensure all products are developed to specifications and completed according to schedule. Reporting to the Vice President of Product and Marketing and working closely with Category Managers and other key leaders, the Project Manager will plan, track, and report on the development schedule of all products across all categories.

The Project Manager will lead continuous efforts to improve process efficiency, streamline workflows, and optimize communication within the product development discipline. Additionally, they will support Category Managers in troubleshooting and resolving product engineering, costing, quality, and packaging issues. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning

  • Establish, review, and maintain product development timelines in conjunction with Senior Management and Category Managers, working with cross-functional teams to set clearly delineated goals and agreed- upon critical dates to meet market needs and revising the schedule as required.
  • Create a detailed work plan that identifies and sequences activities required to successfully complete the project.
  • Determine, identify, and secure resources required to complete projects.
  • Establish a communication schedule to update stakeholders including appropriate staff in the organization on the progress of the project.
  • Participate in category planning and strategy kickoff meetings.

Process Improvement

  • Develop PD resources, tools, and training materials including but not limited to: item templates, technical specification decks, tracking documentation reports, SOPs, and technology.
  • Identify areas for improved efficiency in the product development process and champion continuous improvement initiatives relating to process and workflows.
  • Implement project management best practices to optimize existing processes and/or develop new processes to improve efficiency in product development.

Implement/ Execute

  • Execute the project according to the project plan.
  • Develop forms, records, and filing protocols to document project activities.
  • Monitor the progress of the project and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project.
  • Maintain established communication schedule to update stakeholders including appropriate staff in the organization on the progress of the project. 

Control

  • Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards.
  • Ensure project deliverables are on time, within budget and at desired quality
  • Evaluate the outcomes of the project as established during the planning phase

Evaluate

  • Ensure project deliverables are on time, within budget and at desired quality.

  • Produce regular reports on the project to be shared with product teams and leadership that identify areas for improvement and make appropriate recommendations.

Communication and Leadership

  • Facilitate productive working relationships and effective communication with all internal and external partners.
  • Lead communications across a multi-disciplinary, geographically remote product development team. Conduct regular weekly meetings with team; communicate daily via email, phone, or 1:1 with all contributors as necessary.  Hold video teleconferences or conference calls for key design turnovers and/or key product issues.
  • Ensure clarity of objectives, timelines, resources, and references and enforce accountability among all partners in development of products.
  • Maintain management reports and ensure data is accurate in informational systems.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with Hong Kong/ China team members, assuring service levels between locations are met.
  • Directly manage the product Sample Coordinator.
  • In consultation with the appropriate manager, select staff and/or recommend recruitment of personnel with appropriate skills.
  • Ensure that all project personnel receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and the project.
  • Contract qualified consultants to work on projects as appropriate.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • BS/BA in creative, business, or technical area or equivalent experience (or a combination of equivalent education and experience).

Experience

  • 5+ years experience in the consumer goods industry, sporting goods or toys preferred.
  • Demonstrated success managing consumer goods product development projects through to completion in a globally distributed and highly matrixed organization.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for UL, FDA, FCC.
  • Expertise in agile, lean, and/or scrum project management methodology. Project Management certification preferred.

  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple complex consumer goods product development projects across various timelines.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership experience in a matrix reporting structure.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate, communicate, and influence cross-functional teams in the US and globally.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize multiple projects with shifting priorities.
  • Strong written, visual and oral communication skills with the ability to develop and sustain productive relationships with internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to thrive in an ever-changing, interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.
  • Analytical orientation with creative and effective problem-solving skills, and the ability to distinguish when issues should be escalated.
